Blood tests answer specific questions — about cholesterol, blood sugar, iron, thyroid function, kidney and liver health, and much more. Your GP will order the tests that match your symptoms, age, family history and any medications you take.
Most Medicare-eligible pathology is bulk billed by the collection centre, so there’s usually no cost for the test itself. You’ll need a current request form from your doctor, and some tests require fasting — we’ll tell you exactly how to prepare.
Every result that comes back to the practice is reviewed by a doctor. If anything needs action, we’ll contact you. For routine results, a follow-up appointment lets your GP explain the numbers properly rather than leaving you to interpret a report on your own.

- How to prepare
- Check your request form — some tests need 8 to 12 hours of fasting.
- Drink water before your collection; it makes veins easier to find.
- Bring your Medicare card and the request form to the collection centre.
- Keep taking regular medications unless your doctor says otherwise.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an appointment to get a blood test?
You need a GP appointment to get the request form, then you attend a pathology collection centre at a time that suits you. Fasting tests are easiest first thing in the morning.
How long do results take?
Most routine results reach the practice within 1 to 3 business days. Some specialised tests take longer. We’ll contact you if anything needs prompt attention.
Will someone call me if my results are normal?
We contact patients when results need action or discussion. For routine screening, book a follow-up appointment when you have the test so your GP can go through everything with you.
Are blood tests free?
Most Medicare-eligible tests are bulk billed by the pathology provider. A small number of tests aren’t covered by Medicare — your doctor will tell you before ordering if there’s a cost.
