Skin checks are important as an early cancer detection system. We offer a full skin check to help track any abnormalities — with certain procedures also available in the practice.

Early detection saves lives.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world — two in three Australians will be diagnosed with a form of skin cancer before the age of 70. Regular skin checks are the most reliable way to catch changes early, when treatment is simplest and most effective.

During your appointment, your doctor will examine your skin from head to toe, checking moles, freckles and lesions for any signs of change. Anything of concern can be photographed and tracked over time, biopsied, or removed — often on-site at our practice.

If a mole or lesion needs removal, we offer minor surgical procedures including punch and shave biopsies, simple excisions and larger flap excisions. Suture removal and results are usually included in the procedure fee.

Abnormalities are recorded so changes can be monitored over time.

On-site procedures

Biopsies and excisions performed at the practice — from $150.

Results & follow-up

Suture removal and results usually included in the procedure fee.

Remove nail polish and heavy makeup before your appointment.
Note any moles or spots that have changed size, shape or colour.
Wear clothing that is easy to remove — the check covers your whole body.
Bring your Medicare card and any previous skin-check records.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have a skin check?

Most adults should have a full skin check annually. If you have a personal or family history of skin cancer, fair skin, or a large number of moles, your doctor may recommend more frequent checks.

What happens if the doctor finds something?

Anything of concern can be photographed for monitoring, biopsied, or removed. Minor surgical procedures — punch/shave biopsies from $150, simple excisions from $180, larger flap excisions from $250 — are performed on-site. These are private fees and cannot be claimed with Medicare.

Is a skin check covered by Medicare?

A skin check consultation (Item 36) is $180 with a Medicare rebate of $87.10, leaving a gap of $92.90 ($150 with a $62.90 gap for concession card holders). Skin procedures themselves are private fees.

How long does a skin check take?

A full skin check is booked as a long consultation — allow around 20–30 minutes. Please arrive 10 minutes early if it is your first visit to the practice.
