Referral to Specialists
A good referral is more than a letter — it’s the right specialist, the right information, and a GP who follows what happens next.
- Preventive Care
The referral letter does more work than you'd think
To claim a Medicare rebate for a specialist visit, you need a current GP referral. But the letter matters beyond the rebate: a detailed referral — history, examination findings, results, medications — helps the specialist triage you appropriately and means your first specialist appointment starts from information, not from scratch.
After 25+ years serving Adelaide, we know Adelaide’s specialist landscape — who has reasonable waiting times, who suits anxious patients, where public clinic pathways make sense over private rooms. We’ll discuss options and costs with you rather than defaulting to one name.
Referrals also aren’t the end of our involvement. Specialist letters come back to us, results are filed in your record, and your GP remains the person coordinating the overall picture — especially when more than one specialist is involved.

- Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a referral without an appointment?
No — a referral is a clinical document, so your doctor needs to assess you first. It’s also the safest approach: the assessment sometimes changes which specialist, or which test, you actually need.
How long does a referral last?
GP referrals to specialists are valid for 12 months from first use. For ongoing conditions your GP can write an indefinite referral, so you’re not caught out mid-treatment.
Can I choose which specialist I see?
Yes. Your GP will suggest options, but the choice is yours. If you have a preferred specialist, tell us and we’ll address the referral to them.
My referral expired. What do I do?
Book a standard consultation before your next specialist visit. Renewing it is straightforward, and it’s a good opportunity for your GP to review how the treatment is going.

I have been a patient at this medical practice since it opened in 2023. The receptionists are wonderful in providing my wife and myself with medical and specialists appointments and the doctors and nurses have been very supportive to both of us. A big thank you to all.Posted on Google![]()
